In April, Bobby Smith will celebrate 30 years of ministry on staff at First Baptist Church of Nacogdoches.  He serves as Associate Pastor and ministers to local college students.  We asked Bobby a few questions about his ministry.

Q. What is one thing that is working well for your college ministry right now?

A. Our church is blessed with a young couple that leads out on Sunday mornings and is involved in every event we do. Sam and Coby are the Core of our Ministry. Everyone needs a Sam and Coby. They are a God gift to our University students and our ministry. Our community groups on Sunday nights is going incredibly well. Our students are in the homes of several families every Sunday night to have a light meal and then spend time praying for each other. It is growing our fellowship very close and the students enjoy the prayer and intimacy of knowing our families and each other better.

Q.   You are serving on the Go Now Committee this year. Is there anything in particular you would like others in church college ministry in our state to know about Go Now?

A.  I’m convinced that nothing impacts our students like missions will. I believe in Go Now. It is the heartbeat of our students to go and share. I can promise you that no better money or time is spent than that time which is given and money that is spent on missions. If Texas Baptists want to boast, let us boast in the fact that we love our Savior and believe that the most important thing we can ever do is share that love. That is the mission of Go Now and I am humbled to know the people who help make it happen and to have the privilege to pray and serve along with them.

Q.   What has been the most impactful mission opportunity that your students have been a part of?

A.  Whatever our last trip was…Seriously, every mission trip we have taken has impacted students more than I could have ever dreamed. Five years ago we established a relationship with Won By One to Jamaica and have taken our college students there. This year we will take 30 students over Christmas Break. Go Now will have a group there at the same time. This trip has been incredibly life changing for our students. My college roommate is one of the missionaries on staff. Talk to Brenda about this great place or check out their website @

Q.   Where do you draw strength?

A.  Well, without question, my faith in Christ is the rock on which I lean. But, I have to say beyond His grace and mercy in my life, I am blessed beyond belief with an incredible wife and family. Laura is the definition of a “saint” and without her I would be nothing. And my three incredible children bring me great joy and laughter. I love them with all my heart!
